Pacific Standard magazine now published by The Social Justice Foundation
Pacific Standard magazine will now be published by The Social Justice Foundation, a non-profit organization with a mission of informing and educating the public with content based on scientific research, supported by SAGE Publishing.
The magazine has also just completed its expansion from publishing six to eight print issues per year and transitioned to the Say Media platform for its digital version. Pacific Standard now reaches more than 1 million readers a month in print and online.
Formerly Miller-McCune Center for Research, Media, and Public Policy, The Social Justice Foundation will connect Pacific Standard with authors, editors, scholarly societies, and the wider social science community to help support the wider dissemination of important ideas and research. Additionally, The Social Justice Foundation will explore other projects that support its mission of informing and educating the broader public with content based on scientific research.
“I’ve worked with many societies and social scientists looking for an effective way to transfer knowledge beyond the academic community,” said Geane deLima, executive director of the Foundation. “The Foundation was created specifically to do just that: to systematically frame, contextualize, and apply complex knowledge to everyday news consumed by households. How do we nudge human behavior toward just and sustainable behaviors? By providing workers, voters, families and educators with regular access to scientific knowledge so that complex issues are clearly understood and policy responses are supported.”
Combining basic research with ambitious narrative and investigative reporting, Pacific Standard covers society’s biggest problems, both established and emerging, and the people attempting to solve them. SAGE founder and executive chairperson Sara Miller McCune established the magazine (originally titled Miller-McCune) in 2008 through the Miller-McCune Center for Research, Media and Public Policy, which reflects her longstanding interests in issues related to social, environmental, economic, and educational justice. It was re-titled Pacific Standard in 2012.
"SAGE Publishing has supported the award-winning Pacific Standard since its launch,” explained Clive Parry, President of the newly organized Social Justice Foundation and SAGE’s Global Vice President of Marketing and Public Affairs. “This new and closer relationship between SAGE and Pacific Standard through The Social Justice Foundation will allow us to support the mission of the magazine and the Foundation to use research to inform public policy and create a more just society even more effectively. I look forward to working more closely with the very talented Pacific Standard team."
The American Society of Magazine Editors has twice honored Pacific Standard: for Public Interest in 2015 and for Feature Photography in 2017. In 2016, the magazine received the Science in Society Journalism Award for its investigative reporting about the sciences and their impact on society from the National Association of Science Writers. Pacific Standard also received five Maggie awards from the Western Publishing Association, including Best Feature Article and Best Politics & Social Issues magazine in 2013.
“Pacific Standard has long been recognized with journalism’s highest honors,” said Nicholas Jackson, the magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, “but this renewed focus – with generous support from SAGE and the Foundation – will allow us to expand our reach and bring this important work to an even wider audience.”
