The First World War Portal Awarded Best Reference by Library Journal

March 3, 2014

The combined award covers both First World War collections: Personal Experiences and Propaganda and Recruitment

Marlborough, England - Digital primary sources publisher, Adam Matthew, announced today that The First World War Portal is the latest Adam Matthew collection to be awarded Best Reference by Library Journal.

Each year, Library Journal evaluates over 8,000 books, e-books, audiobooks, videos/DVDs, databases, systems and websites and then awards the prestigious Best Reference accolade to a select few. The list is published in the March 1 issue. Commenting on The First World War Portal, Library Journal says, “Stunning in depth and range; this First World War Portal will bring the Great War directly to the desktops of researchers ranging from high school students to the most advanced World War I scholar.”

The First World War Portal was sourced from leading libraries and archives around the world, including the unique collections of California’s Hoover Institution; Bibliothek für Zeitgeschichte, Stuttgart, Germany; The National Archives (UK); the National Library of New Zealand; Cambridge University Library; and National WWI Museum at Liberty Memorial in Kansas City. The portal offers a truly international perspective of the Great War.

“We are thrilled to have received Library Journal’s Best Reference award for our First World War Portal,” commented Sarah Mellowes, Adam Matthew Editor. “We’re very proud to be involved in such an important project and delighted that institutions around the world now have access to this unique, fascinating and emotive content.”

Adam Matthew is planning further additions to the digital portal, including Visual Perspectives and Narratives, which will be published this spring to coincide with the WWI centenary. That collection will be sourced exclusively from London’s Imperial War Museum.
