Political Research Quarterly is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes original research on all aspects of politics. Among the leading generalist journals of political science, PRQ seeks to publish significant contributions to knowledge which engage readers across multiple fields of scholarship, as well as exceptional contributions within specialized fields. Our authors and reviewers come from all over the world and from across the spectrum of methodological and substantive expertise. Both the journal and its host organization, the Western Political Science Association, have a reputation for showcasing pluralistic and intellectually innovative research, with special emphasis on transcending the boundaries that conventionally separate subfields, methods, and specializations.
This journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Political Research Quarterly publishes scholarly research that covers the breadth of methodological approaches, theoretical perspectives, and substantive topics in the study of politics. Primary fields of research include the following:

PRQ especially encourages research that is problem-driven and that utilizes multiple methodological and theoretical frameworks to address major political problems or puzzles. The journal also attempts to reflect the diversity of the discipline of political science and to serve as a meaningful forum for critical analysis and debate.
Though primarily a venue for original research articles, PRQ features occasional collections of articles on a common theme or debate, to be published as short symposia. Symposium proposals are welcome, and individual submissions will undergo the same review process as manuscripts of research articles. Important debates between scholars or responses to controversial articles are also featured from time to time.

As a generalist journal, Political Research Quarterly (PRQ) publishes scholarly research that covers the breadth of methodological approaches, theoretical perspectives, and substantive topics in the study of politics. A manuscript that respects PRQ’s generalist mission and readership will attempt to contribute knowledge and insights that engage readers across multiple fields of political research, or that constitute an exceptional contribution within a specialized field.
Political Research Quarterly uses a double-anonymize review process in which authors’ names are unknown to reviewers, and vice versa. The principle of anonymity requires that authors and reviewers alike should not deliberately make their identities public during the review process, or in anticipation of a review process soon to be underway. PRQ does not review papers that are under consideration for publication elsewhere or whose contents have been substantially published or are forthcoming elsewhere. Papers that do not meet the formatting and submission guidelines described below will not be sent out for review.
Style and Formatting. Authors preparing work for submission to PRQ should observe the below guidelines:
- 10,000 word limit, including text, tables, citations, footnotes, endnotes, and references. Appendices are not included in the 10,000 word limit, but should be designated as “Online Appendix” and included at the end of the manuscript.
- Abstract of no more than 200 words at the beginning of a manuscript.
- Manuscript pages numbered consecutively
- Tables and figures placed either in the body of the paper or at the end of the document.
- All of the text, citations, and references should be double-spaced (but tables may be single-spaced) in Times New Roman 12-point font. Tables may be single-spaced.
- Follow and author-date citation method. Manuscripts that uses another citation method when submitted for review may be subsequently converted to PRQ style by the author in the event that it is accepted for publication.
Submission Process. Manuscripts must be submitted electronically to (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/prq), where authors will be required to register their own account. Manuscripts will be sent out anonymously for editorial evaluation. Obtaining permission for any quoted or reprinted material that requires permission is the responsibility of the author. Submission of a manuscript implies commitment to publish in the journal. Authors submitting manuscripts to the journal should not simultaneously submit them to another journal, nor should manuscripts have been published elsewhere in substantially similar form or with substantially similar content. Questions about the submission process should be directed to the editorial office at prq@uci.edu.
Replication Policy. As a leading outlet for political research, PRQ is dedicated to increasing research transparency. The corresponding author of a manuscript accepted for publication is expected to address data availability and replication in the final draft, typically in a footnote. PRQ's authors may use an online public archive of their choice, or may submit their replication data directly to the PRQ editorial office for long-term storage on Sage Publications' servers, where they will be accessible as supplementary material through PRQ's website. While the data necessary to replicate results are required to be publicly available, we also suggest that authors include any codebook, specialized computer programs, lists of computer program recodes, or program-specific syntax files, as appropriate. Finally, authors are advised to remove information from their datasets that should remain confidential, such as the names of survey respondents.

Anonymize Review Policy. Political Research Quarterly relies upon a double-anonymize review process to provide authors with a reasonably unbiased assessment of their research. In order to maintain the integrity of this system, we ask that manuscripts have all author-identifying information removed. This includes any acknowledgements or expressions of gratitude, research funding or grant disclosures, and direct references to the author’s university or department. In addition, authors are welcome to include a reasonable number of citations to their own work, so long as they cannot be used to identify the manuscript’s author. In order to do so, authors must refer to their previous work in the third person and include the work in the list of references. Given that self-citations to published work is acceptable, placeholders such as “Omitted Citation,” “Anonymized,” “Anonymous,” “Authors XXXX,” and “Redacted” should be avoided. Finally, authors should avoid citing their own doctoral dissertations, conference papers, manuscripts in review, and forthcoming publications. Please note that, in the event a manuscript is accepted for publication, any self-identifying citations or information can be added to the final version.
Manuscripts that have potentially compromising information may be returned to the authors for editing, which could delay the review process.
ORCID. As part of our commitment to ensuring an ethical, transparent and fair peer review process Sage is a supporting member of ORCID, the Open Researcher and Contributor ID.
