The mission of the Journal of Family Nursing (JFN) is to extend knowledge about family response to health and illness and improve healthcare offered to families. JFN is a peer-reviewed journal publishing scholarly work on nursing research, practice, education, and policy issues related to families in health and illness. Appropriate articles of empirical and theoretical analysis on the subject of family health will also be considered for publication. Both family-as-context and family-as-unit are represented. The journal recognizes a strong mandate to represent cultural diversity and families across the life cycle and encourages interdisciplinary and collaborative perspectives as well as international contributions. Papers will be selected for their scientific merit and creative treatment of significant issues in the field. One of the objectives of the journal is to establish a forum in which practitioners, educators, and researchers in various clinical specialties and settings can extend the lively debate and begin a more critical dialogue about the family in health and illness.

Extending Knowledge; Transforming Practice
Journal of Family Nursing is owned by Sage Publications. The first issue of this quarterly journal began in February 1995. Janice M. Bell, RN, PhD, (University of Calgary) is the Founding Editor of this journal.
Sage Publishing disseminates high-quality research and engaged scholarship globally, and we are committed to diversity and inclusion in publishing. We encourage submissions from a diverse range of authors from across all countries and backgrounds.
The Journal of Family Nursing (JFN) is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes scholarly work on research, practice, education, and policy issues related to families in health and illness. The mission of the journal is to extend understanding about the relationships between families, health, illness, and health care with a goal of transforming practice with families by nurses and other helping professionals. Papers will be selected for their scientific merit and creative treatment of significant issues in the field. A compelling argument for how the paper significantly extends knowledge about a particular population of families and/or the care offered to families is a central requirement. Priority will be given to papers that focus on family interventions and knowledge transfer or knowledge translation of family nursing theory to practice settings. Interprofessional perspectives are encouraged, as are international contributions.
The JFN received its first Impact Factor in the Clarivate Analytics Journal Citation Reports 2007. JFN has a 2019 Impact Factor of 1.889 and is now ranked 27 out of 123 in Nursing (SCIE), 25/121 in Nursing (SSCI), and 16 out of 47 in Family Studies (SSCI).
One of the objectives of the journal is to establish a forum in which practitioners, educators, and researchers in various clinical specialties and disciplines can extend the lively debate and begin a more critical dialogue to grow knowledge about the family in health and illness and transform family focused health care.
This Journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
This Journal recommends that authors follow the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals formulated by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE)
