SAGE Publishing reports continued strong growth in 2016 Release of Journal Citation Reports (Source: 2015 Web of Science Data)

July 13, 2016

SAGE Publishing, one of the world’s leading independent academic and professional publishers, today reported continued strong performance and growth across its journals portfolio in the Journal Citation Reports (Source: 2015 Web of Science Data).

With 548 journals now ranked in the JCR, SAGE continues to experience consistent growth within the reports, achieving a 42% increase over the past five years. In this year’s reports, over 100 SAGE journals have received a top 10 category rank, with 5 journals receiving their first Impact Factor (IF). 242 titles are now placed in the top 30% of the JCR, and 55% of SAGE journals are ranked within the top half of their subject category.

A 36% increase in coverage in the SSCI over the last five years means that there are now 386 SAGE journals in the SSCI.  61% of the SSCI journals received an increased Impact Factor. 148 journals are now placed in the top 25% of the JCR rankings for their category, an increase of 8 journals from the 2014 reports. In the 2015 reports SAGE publishes the market-leading journal within 7 SSCI categories:

  • Cultural Studies (Journal of Consumer Culture); Education, Special (Exceptional Children); History & Philosophy of Science (SSCI) (Social Studies of Science); Psychology, Applied (Journal of Management); Psychology, Social (Personality and Social Psychology Review); Social Work (Trauma, Violence, & Abuse) and Women’s Studies (Gender & Society).

5 journals received their first Impact Factor, including Organizational Psychology Review with a first Impact Factor of 2.069. Many journals experienced a large increase in Impact Factor including Journal of Consumer Culture, and Work and Occupations, both doubling their Impact Factor to 2.816 and 2.667 respectively.

SAGE has seen a 70% increase over the past five years in the number of titles indexed in the SCI index. This has primarily been a result of the organic growth across our journals portfolio and SAGE’s strategic acquisitions across the medical, engineering and technology disciplines. SAGE continues to significantly grow its coverage within SCI with 205 journals now ranked and 52 journals in the top 25% of their SCI categories. In the 2015 reports SAGE publishes the market leading journal within 4 SCI categories:

  • History & Philosophy of Science (Social Studies of Science); Medical Informatics; and Statistics & Probability (Statistical Methods in Medical Research leading in both of these categories) and Rehabilitation (Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair). By 5 year Impact Factor, SAGE publishes the market-leading journal in Orthopedics (The American Journal of Sports Medicine); Rehabilitation (Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair) and History & Philosophy of Science (Social Studies of Science).

Of particular note are the journals within clinical neurology and neurosciences categories, which performed particularly well, with 2 year Impact Factors ranging from 7.295 to 4.671 for titles including The Neuroscientist; Cephalalgia; Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism; and Multiple Sclerosis Journal. In addition, the Journal of Sandwich Structures and Materials, and Ultrasonic Imaging, and Health Informatics Journal, received notable Impact Factors, doubling from 2015 achieving 2.852, 2.111, and 1.578, respectively.

Speaking about the JCR Citation Reports, Bob Howard, Vice President of Journals Editorial, SAGE Publishing remarked:

“We are pleased to once again be able to report continued growth and strong performances across both the SCI and SSCI categories for our journal portfolio. While SAGE has long recognized the need to consider other measures of journal quality to ensure the creation of a balanced picture, it is pleasing to see increased JCR Impact Factors across our portfolio, reflecting well on the commitment and skill of our editors, article contributors and the highly talented teams that support them.”
